Packing for Komodo: What to Bring on a Phinisi Trip
The complete packing list for a Komodo National Park liveaboard — what to bring, what to leave behind, and how to pack a single carry-on bag when laundry in Labuan Bajo means you never need more than five days of clothes.
Why Packing Light Matters on a Phinisi
Phinisi boats — the traditional Indonesian wooden sailing vessels used for Komodo liveaboards — are beautiful, but they are not designed for overpacked Western luggage. Cabins are typically compact, storage space under the bunk is limited to a single medium soft bag, and there is rarely anywhere to hang extra clothing beyond a single hook.
Beyond the physical constraints, heavy luggage creates problems at every stage of a Komodo trip. Domestic flights to Labuan Bajo (from Bali or Lombok) have strict 7–10 kg carry-on limits and often enforce them. Boat transfers from harbour to Phinisi are done by tender — a small dinghy — and bags need to be lifted in and out of the water. And during trekking on Komodo and Rinca islands, you need to move freely, not wrestle a massive pack.
The strategy that works best: pack for 5 days and use laundry in Labuan Bajo before your trip and after. You arrive light, you return everything clean, and you fly home with space in your bag for something from the market.
Most Komodo liveaboards depart from Labuan Bajo harbour in the morning. If you arrive in Labuan Bajo a day or two before, hand your laundry to Bajo Laundry on arrival and collect clean clothes the morning of departure. WhatsApp +62 811-556-553 to arrange.
The Komodo Packing List
This list is built for a 5–8 day Komodo trip — a combination of liveaboard days and nights in Labuan Bajo. Everything fits into a 45L daypack or soft duffel. You will not need more.
- 3–4 technical shirts — linen or quick-dry
- 2 pairs of shorts — one on-boat, one trekking
- 1 light jacket or fleece — boat nights get cold
- 1 smart-casual outfit — dinner in Labuan Bajo
- 4 sets of underwear — merino or synthetic
- 3–4 pairs of socks
- 1 sun shirt / rash guard — for reef snorkelling
- 2 swimsuits / boardshorts — always have one dry
- 1 bikini top extra if relevant
- Rash guard counts double — swim & sun protection
- 1 pair of trekking sandals — closed-toe for Komodo
- 1 pair of flip-flops — boat & beach
- Heavy hiking boots — not needed, not worth the weight
- Multiple pairs of trainers — leave at home
- Reef-safe mineral sunscreen — SPF 50, at least 2 bottles
- Insect repellent — DEET for Komodo island
- Shampoo, conditioner (small)
- Toothbrush, toothpaste
- Seasickness tablets — Dramamine or ginger
- Full-size bottles of anything
- Personal mask & snorkel — boat masks are generic
- Wetsuit or lycra suit if you own one
- Dive computer (if you dive)
- BCD, regulator — liveaboards provide these
- Multiple fins — provided on most trips
- Dry bag (10–20L) — essential on any water transfer
- Waterproof phone case or GoPro
- Power bank (20,000 mAh recommended)
- Universal adapter (Indonesia: Type C/F)
- Headlamp — useful on deck at night
- Laptop — leave in Labuan Bajo hotel
What to Skip (Because We'll Wash It)
The biggest source of over-packing is clothes. Travellers pack for every possible scenario, but a Komodo trip is not a varied one. You are either on a boat, in the water, or walking on an island. Every day is a variation of the same outfit.
Because laundry in Labuan Bajo with pickup is available both before and after your trip, you do not need:
- More than 4 tops. You'll be rinsing saltwater out daily anyway. Fresh clothes after each liveaboard segment is all you need.
- More than 2 pairs of shorts. One for the boat, one for shore. That is genuinely it.
- A week's worth of underwear. Five days maximum. Laundry happens when you return.
- A "backup" formal outfit. Labuan Bajo restaurants are casual. A linen shirt or clean dress covers any dinner in town.
- More than 2 swimsuits. You can rinse one while wearing the other. Two is the right number.
Can you lift your bag with one hand and carry it 100 metres without stopping? If not, it's too heavy. Pack everything you think you need, then remove one third of it. You'll use everything that remains.
Choosing the Right Bag
For a Komodo liveaboard, the right bag is a soft-sided duffel or pack, 40–60 litres. Here's why hard shells and big bags fail:
- Hard suitcases can't fit under Phinisi bunks. Most under-bunk storage is 25–30 cm high. Rolling suitcases don't fit, get in the way, and become a source of cabin conflict.
- Large bags make tender transfers dangerous. When boarding a Phinisi via dinghy from the pier, bags are passed over the water. A 30 kg hard shell is a liability.
- Overhead domestic airline storage doesn't fit full-size cases. Wings Air and Garuda's smaller regional planes on the Bali–Labuan Bajo route have small overhead bins.
Our recommendation: a waterproof or water-resistant 45L roll-top duffel that doubles as a day bag. Leave any large checked bags stored at your Labuan Bajo hotel while you're on the liveaboard.
How Much Does It Weigh?
Here's an approximate weight breakdown for the 5-day Komodo capsule described above:
| Category | Items | Approx. Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing (shirts, shorts, layer) | 6–7 items | 1.4 kg |
| Swimwear | 2–3 items | 0.3 kg |
| Footwear (sandals + flip-flops) | 2 pairs | 0.9 kg |
| Toiletries & sunscreen | Full kit | 0.8 kg |
| Dive/snorkel kit | Mask, wetsuit | 1.2 kg |
| Tech & gear (dry bag, power bank etc.) | 6–8 items | 1.0 kg |
| Bag itself (40–45L soft duffel) | 1 bag | 0.6 kg |
| Total | ~6.2 kg |
6.2 kg fits comfortably within most domestic carry-on limits and can be carried all day without strain. If you're flying in with a checked bag, store it at your hotel — take only this capsule on the boat.

Reef-Safe Essentials for Komodo
Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on Earth. Sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, and benzophenone are harmful to coral and some have been banned in marine protected areas globally.
In Komodo, the reef's condition depends on every diver and snorkeller making responsible choices. Bring mineral-based sunscreen — zinc oxide or titanium dioxide — and apply it at least 20 minutes before entering the water. This also helps protect your swimwear, as mineral sunscreen is significantly less damaging to Lycra than chemical alternatives.
Other reef-safe habits on a Komodo trip:
- Never touch coral, even accidentally with fins.
- Use biodegradable soap and shampoo for any freshwater rinses on the boat.
- Don't feed marine life, including manta rays.
- Keep your laundry water (on land, not the boat) out of the marine environment — another reason to use a proper laundry service in Labuan Bajo rather than washing in the ocean.
The Laundry Strategy for Komodo Travellers
Here's the workflow that maximises clean clothes and minimises packing for a typical Komodo trip:
- Arrive in Labuan Bajo the evening before your liveaboard departs. Message Bajo Laundry on WhatsApp. We collect from your hotel that evening or the next morning.
- Board your Phinisi with completely clean clothes. Everything freshly washed, dried and folded. Maximum clean-clothes runway.
- On board: Rinse saltwater clothing daily in fresh water if the boat permits. Keep clothes rotating to stay reasonably fresh.
- Return to Labuan Bajo. You'll have a bag of damp, salt-stiff, dive-scented clothes. Message us from the harbour — we'll collect.
- 24-hour express service gets everything back before your flight. Or leave normal service clothes with us and fly home with just a light daypack.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there laundry on Phinisi liveaboard boats?
Most Komodo liveaboard Phinisi boats do not have laundry facilities on board. Some may rinse dive gear in fresh water on request, but there is no washing machine service. Bajo Laundry in Labuan Bajo offers pickup from the harbour for guests before and after their trip.
What bag should I bring on a Komodo Phinisi trip?
A soft-sided duffel or backpack between 40 and 60 litres is ideal. Hard-shell suitcases don't fit under Phinisi bunks and are awkward in tender transfers. Leave any large bags stored at your Labuan Bajo accommodation.
Do I need reef-safe sunscreen for Komodo National Park?
Yes. Komodo is a protected marine environment. Bring mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) rather than chemical sunscreen containing oxybenzone or octinoxate. This also protects your swimwear from colour fading.
How many days of clothes should I pack?
Pack for 5 days maximum. With laundry available in Labuan Bajo before and after your trip, you don't need more. For trips longer than a week, use our express service between segments.
What should I wear trekking on Komodo island?
Closed-toe shoes or sandals (mandatory — dragons live here), light breathable pants or long shorts, a long-sleeve sun shirt, and a hat. The terrain is rocky and the sun is extreme. Leave anything white or pale at the hotel — the red laterite soil stains.
